Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is one of Africa’s leading and most celebrated national parks, attracting travelers from around the world. It is renowned for its extraordinary diversity of wildlife, including the iconic Big Five, a rich variety of plant species, and breathtaking savannah landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see. However, the Serengeti is best known for hosting the legendary Great Wildebeest Migration across its vast plains.

The name Serengeti originates from the Maasai word “Siringet,” meaning “endless plains,” a description that perfectly captures the park’s sweeping scenery. Covering approximately 15,000 km², Serengeti National Park is the second-largest national park in Tanzania and remains a must-visit destination for nature and wildlife lovers.

The Great Migration Safari

Step into the heart of the wild and witness one of nature’s most spectacular events — the Great Migration in Serengeti National Park. Every year, from July to late September, over a million wildebeest embark on a dramatic and perilous journey, crossing the mighty Mara River into Kenya’s Maasai Mara in search of fresh water and grazing lands. Although this period is the peak migration season, Serengeti remains an exceptional year-round game viewing destination.

Accompanied by thousands of zebras and Thomson’s gazelles, the herds face powerful river currents and lurking Nile crocodiles, creating one of the most thrilling wildlife spectacles on Earth. This awe-inspiring phenomenon is recognized as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and is an unforgettable experience for any safari enthusiast.

Our experienced guides at Akondo Adventure expertly track the migration’s ever-changing route, guided by seasonal rainfall patterns. As the animals move in a continuous circular journey between the Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara, you can join us at any time of the year to witness this extraordinary natural event.

Calving Season

The Migration Calving Season in the Serengeti is a remarkable and life-affirming spectacle that usually occurs from late December to March in the southern Serengeti, particularly the Ndutu region. During this time, vast herds of wildebeest, zebras, and other herbivores gather to give birth on the open plains before gradually dispersing toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The Ndutu plains are chosen for calving due to their nutrient-rich grasses, formed from volcanic ash deposited by ancient eruptions. These fertile pastures provide ideal conditions for newborn calves and their mothers. Visitors can witness thousands of wildebeest calves taking their first steps, while predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas closely follow, creating dramatic and unforgettable wildlife encounters.

The Calving Season perfectly illustrates the circle of life in the African wilderness.
