Selous/ Nyerere National park

Formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is one of Africa’s largest and most spectacular wildlife sanctuaries, located in southern Tanzania. Covering an immense area of approximately 50,000 square kilometers, it stands as one of the continent’s last great wilderness areas. The park was originally named after Frederick Selous, a renowned explorer and conservationist, and earned UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1982 due to its outstanding ecological significance.

Breathtaking Wilderness

Nyerere National Park is celebrated for its vast, unspoiled landscapes. The scenery ranges from open grassy plains and miombo woodlands to lakes, wetlands, and winding river systems. Flowing through the heart of the park is the Rufiji River, Tanzania’s largest river, which enhances the park’s beauty and supports an abundance of wildlife.

Rich Wildlife Diversity

The park hosts an impressive variety of wildlife, including large populations of elephants, as well as hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, and numerous antelope species. It is particularly famous for its strong population of African wild dogs, one of the world’s most endangered carnivores, making it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

One of the park’s standout features is the opportunity to enjoy boat safaris along the Rufiji River and its channels. This unique experience allows visitors to observe wildlife from the water, offering close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and water-dependent bird species from a completely different perspective.
