5-Day Kilimanjaro Trek; Marangu Experience

From $1892

Set out on an exciting 5-day adventure to reach the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa, using the famous Marangu Route—widely known as the “Coca-Cola Route” due to its comfort and popularity. This is the only route on the mountain that provides dormitory-style huts instead of tents, making it appealing to many climbers. Because the schedule is short and allows limited time for altitude adjustment, this itinerary is ideal for experienced hikers or those who are already well adapted to high-altitude conditions.

ITINERARY

Day 1

Day 1- Arusha to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

The trip starts with an early morning pickup from Arusha, usually between 7:00 and 8:00 am, followed by a road transfer of about 120 km to Marangu Gate, taking roughly 3.5 to 4 hours. Once at Marangu Gate (1,870 m / 6,135 ft), you will register with Kilimanjaro National Park, collect your climbing permit, sign in at the park office, and meet your mountain team, including guides, porters, and a cook.

After completing formalities, the hike begins through dense rainforest, a habitat rich in bird species and often home to blue monkeys. The day’s trek ends at Mandara Hut, where you will settle in for an overnight stay.

Day 2

Day 2- Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Begin the day by hiking through the final section of montane rainforest, which gradually transitions within 30–60 minutes into open heath and moorland. As you ascend, the dense forest gives way to low shrubs, giant lobelias, and groundsels, signaling a noticeable change in vegetation. On clear days, Mawenzi Peak comes into view, with Kibo Peak sometimes visible in the distance.

The path becomes increasingly dry, rocky, and exposed as you continue climbing through the heath and moorland landscape, enjoying expansive views of both Mawenzi and Kibo. The day ends with an overnight stay at Horombo Hut.

Day 3

Day 3- Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

The route climbs out of the moorland and into the alpine desert, a harsh landscape marked by dry air, strong winds, and rocky terrain. Plant life becomes minimal, limited to alpine grasses and small lichens. Throughout the hike, you’ll be treated to striking views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak and the broad, dome-shaped Kibo Peak.

As you continue across the increasingly desolate terrain, the scenery grows more barren. After reaching camp, you’ll rest early to conserve energy for the summit attempt. Later in the evening, your guide will provide a detailed briefing on the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, which typically begins between 11:00 pm and midnight. Before turning in, organize your equipment, food, water, and warm clothing, as you’ll be awakened late at night to begin the climb under darkness.

Day 4

Day 4- Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Summit day begins in the middle of the night, with the climb starting in complete darkness using headlamps and moving steadily through freezing conditions. Due to the extremely thin air, progress is slow and requires short, controlled steps—commonly known as pole pole. The first major landmark is Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim, and reaching it alone is a significant accomplishment. From there, the route follows the rim to Stella Point (5,756 m).

At Stella Point, you are likely to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the glaciers and crater—one of the most memorable moments of the climb. Although the trail here is gradual, the high altitude makes it physically demanding. The final stretch leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa, where you’ll pause for photos at the iconic sign and take in the incredible views before beginning your descent back to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.

Day 5

Day 5- Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Arusha

On the final day of your Kilimanjaro adventure, it’s time to descend and celebrate your incredible achievement! Although the hike downhill is less strenuous than summit day, it remains a long trek. You’ll make your way back through the forest to the park gate, where you’ll be greeted with congratulations and receive your official summit certificate. Afterward, enjoy a transfer back to Arusha or onward to your next destination.
