8-Day Mt Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Trek

From $2000

This Kilimanjaro route is renowned for its stunning scenery and gradual acclimatization, giving climbers a better chance of reaching the summit successfully. We offer this trek over six, seven, or eight days. The journey begins on the western side of the mountain at Londorossi Gate. Alternatively, the Shira Route can be chosen, starting at a higher altitude for a more challenging experience.

ITINERARY

Day 1

Day 1- Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Following a briefing with our climb managers the day before, your guide and mountain support team will meet you at the hotel in the morning for a final briefing. You’ll then drive for approximately 3–4 hours to Kilimanjaro National Park’s western entrance, Londorossi Gate (2,200 m). After completing the quick formalities of obtaining climbing permits and registering with the park’s search and rescue service, the trek begins toward the first campsite: Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,780 m).

Raincoats are essential today, as the trail passes through dense rainforest. Upon arrival at camp, our experienced mountain crew will have tents set up, and lunch prepared for you. After lunch, the group will embark on an acclimatization hike to Shira 1 Camp, gaining about 300 meters in elevation, before returning to Mti Mkubwa Camp for a hot dinner and a well-deserved rest.

Day 2- Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

After an early wake-up and breakfast, you’ll begin a gradual ascent toward 3,500 meters, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo Volcano for the first time. The hike from Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m) is relatively gentle, taking about 5–6 hours, and provides an excellent opportunity to begin the acclimatization process—an essential part of a successful trek. Upon arrival at camp, your professional team will prepare lunch, and you’ll have time to relax in your tent or explore the surrounding area on a short walk.

Day 3

Day 3- Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

From Shira 1 Camp (3,505 m), you’ll set off on a gentle trek to the second high-altitude stop, Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m). This section of the hike is relatively easy and offers stunning views of the African landscape as well as Kilimanjaro’s unique flora. Shira 2 Camp is also the ideal spot, weather permitting, to catch views of Mount Meru, Africa’s fifth-highest peak.

Upon arrival at camp, lunch will be served, followed by a two-hour rest. Later, the group will embark on an acclimatization hike toward Lava Tower Camp, gaining an additional 300 meters in altitude to help your body adjust.

Day 4

Day 4- Shira 2 Camp to the Lava Tower and Descent to Barranco Camp

After breakfast, you’ll leave Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m) and make your way toward the key landmark of the route: Lava Tower (4,630 m). This section involves several ascents and descents, culminating at a high-altitude camp above 4,600 meters. The hike can be challenging, and some discomfort is normal, but spending 1–2 hours here is essential for proper acclimatization, and lunch will be enjoyed at Lava Tower.

Afterward, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m), where you’ll get your first view of the iconic Barranco Wall—impressive for its sheer size and steepness. You’ll climb it the following day, but there’s no need to worry, as the trail is surprisingly manageable.

Day 5

Day 5- Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

You’ll wake up early, enjoy breakfast, and begin the ascent of Barranco Wall—leaving the camp as early as possible is recommended to avoid congestion from other groups. Climbing the gorge wall is not difficult and usually takes about an hour. Once at the top, you can rest and capture photos with the stunning backdrop of Kibo Volcano.

Afterward, the trek continues toward Karanga Camp, a more challenging section with several ascents and descents. There’s no need to worry, as our guides will set a comfortable pace for the group. Upon arrival at Karanga Camp, a warm lunch will be served. Later, you’ll undertake an acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp, gaining an additional 200 meters in altitude before returning to Karanga Camp to rest for the night.

Day 6

Day 6- Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, you’ll set off for Barafu Summit Camp (4,640 m), the base for your night ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Our team will have already prepared the camp with tents and sleeping bags, allowing you time to relax and recover your energy. Once rested, you’ll embark on an acclimatization hike toward the intermediate Kosovo Summit Camp (4,800 m) before returning to Barafu Camp. There, a hot dinner will be served. It’s recommended to spend the rest of the day resting and sleeping in preparation for the night-time summit attempt.

Day 7

Day 7- Ascent to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Millennium Camp

You’ll depart Barafu Camp (4,640 m) at night to begin your climb to Kilimanjaro’s summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). While the technical aspects of the climb are fairly straightforward, the main challenge comes from the high altitude. Each pair of climbers will be assigned a personal guide to monitor both physical and mental well-being throughout the ascent. After reaching Uhuru Peak, you’ll have the option to visit the nearby glacier before descending back to Barafu Camp. Following a short two-hour rest, the descent continues to Millennium Camp (3,820 m).

Day 8

Day 8- Descent from Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

Millennium Camp is nestled in a tropical rainforest. Upon waking, you’ll feel the relief of descending to a lower altitude and the satisfaction of having reached the summit. After enjoying a warm breakfast, the trek continues down to the park’s exit at Mweka Gate (1,650 m). At the gate, the group will gather to congratulate you, and you’ll have the opportunity to leave your thoughts and experiences in the guestbook. Finally, you’ll receive your commemorative summit certificate at our office, followed by a transfer back to Arusha—or to the airport if you have a scheduled flight.
